SLADEA MAKENI BRANCH

SIERRA LEONE ADULT EDUCATION ASSOCIATION

Continuing Education Centre - Makeni

  • Our Goal

To provide educational activities that meet the needs and interest of the learners. We aim to make learners literate, build and enhance their skills and also help them to be more productive citizens.

Due to cultural reasons, illiteracy is still very high among women. Therefore, SLADEA promotes the education of women.

We encourage females to get directly involved in our educational programmes in Bo in order to make them self-reliant and help them overcome their disadvantaged conditions. To promote women’s interests, SLADEA appointed a female co-ordinator to run the centre. She acts as a role model and encourages women to take part in the program.

Our curricula are designed to help every learner to develop positive attitudes and values and to acquire skills and knowledge based on daily experience and our educational input.

Offering skills training in a city where the unemployment rate remains extremely high is an effective way of liberating young people from unemployment and poverty.

  • Our Approach

The instruction we provide focuses on the individual. Our facilitators help learners to proceed according to their abilities, interest and speed. Our programmes are tailored to learners’ aspirations, interests and abilities.

  • Our Activities

Our activities take the form of literacy and numeracy classes, education regarding children’s rights and vocational training.

Participants learn literacy and numeracy during the first part of the morning. We also teach matters related to:

  • Democratic Decision-Making
  • Gender & Development
  • Nutrition
  • Health
  • HIV/AIDS Prevention
  • Human rights
  • Non-violent Communication

Vocational training takes place in the afternoon and focuses on the areas of:

  • Tailoring
  • Hair-Dressing
  • Catering
  • Learning Outcome

The activities in the Makeni education centre are diverse and designed to be attractive to learners. They facilitate tolerance, enrich cultural backgrounds and explore capacities, abilities and talents. The success of our education programme shows that education that is relevant and oriented to the needs of the learners is contributing to their level of commitment to the centre’s program.

Every year up to 60 learners complete a course of training. Many become self-employed while others enrol in formal education courses, or find a suitable job in their community.
